On display until July 5th, Eunam Museum of Art invites 7 Korean artists for an inaugural group exhibition titled ‘The Old Time and New Space’. The participating artists - Kang Joolee, Kim Hye Kyung, Oh Sang Jo, Oh Taewon, Lee Gunhee, Lee Woohyun, and Lee Taehoon - present installations, paintings, sculptures, and films, demonstrating the gesture of 're-matching' with traditional and new ways of using the material itself.

The exhibition and the artists explore the value of 'materials' that each artist incorporates in his or her works and how each material is handled in both traditional and new ways. Hence, it further looks into how 'space' and 'time' can be of one idea as well as being two independent elements. The title of the exhibition presents dichotomous concepts of 'Old and New' and 'Time and Space'. At a first glance, each pair appears to be opposing one another, but on a closer look, the two pairs seem to be coexisting on a same level.

ARTISTS

KANG JOOLEE
Kang Joolee's work is about 'evolation' or even 'survival' as her work attempts to understand ecology found in the cities. By observing the current ecology, the artist presents her views in the ways that she perceived and suggests steps on how to preserve them for the future. The artist works with pen drawing: paper and pens, examples of typical everyday stationary, resemble that of  the ecosystem that can flexibly respond and found in any space.

KIM HYE KYUNG
Kim Hye Kyung creates a film work that presents the value of East Asia's cultures and heritages, evoking a sense of sensibility and identity for those who see Kim's work. The artist finds her way of visual communication by combing digital technologies with antique works of art. Her films transcend both past time and present space as each film is projected onto the ceramics and installations Kim has made.

OH SANG JO
Being a patriot himself, Oh Sang Jo's practice looks at the heritage of Korea's traditional culture in his series of works, which has been particularly shown in his recent 'Dangsan Trees' series. Arriving at contemporary era, many of fundamental necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing have been neglected from consciousness of people and distanced themselves from the central mainstream of the shared conscious. Hence, this led Oh Sang Jo to focus on the traditional values and to take 'photographs slowly' as well.

OH TAEWON
'Drops' is a series of works that takes the form of water - more precisely the form of a waterdrop that is at the moment just before it hits the ground.  Oh Taewon focuses on creating visual spectacles by closely connecting his work with the surrounding space while drawing out some theatrical conditions and emotions.

LEE GUNHEE
Lee Gunhee's work begins with paper and ends with paper. Lee's series of 'Paper on Paper' approaches modern Korean painting by highlighting the characteristics of traditional KoreanHanji paper. The artist overlaps the Hanji paper with newspapers, material known for its absorbent nature.

LEE WOOHYUN
Lee Woohyun creates an awareness of the 'Intangible Space' that exists between objects and perceptions. The artist believes that such awareness of the space allows one to have creative behaviours to think of ideas. From the series of  <사과와 나무> and <같음1-合-三>, Lee presents the 'untouchable but existential' perceptions that are similar and yet different.

LEE TAEHOON
Lee Taehoon's 'Parallel Space' series begin from an attempt to expand fixed space framed within the basic frame of photography. The artist uses a toy camera and overlaps the photographed images, demonstrating a new concept of photography that is different from digitally photo-shopped images.
